OYL 001 Alt
If you like clean, crisp German style beers but want ale turnaround time, this one is a killer tool. It is a Düsseldorf inspired strain that runs clean at cooler temps, with light fruit showing up when fermented warmer. It matures quickly and is a great fit for altbier, kölsch style ales, and other clean hybrid ales.
How it behaves
Flocculation is low, attenuation is about 73 to 77 percent, and the fermentation range is about 55 to 68 F
Quick tip
Start cool for a cleaner profile, then let it rise a few degrees near the end to help it finish strong.
OYL 003 London Ale
Classic English character with a dry finish. This one is known for a mineral driven profile with moderate fruity esters, and it is great when you want a crisp beer that still has traditional English personality. It also does a nice job of letting hop bitterness show through, which makes it a great option for English pale ales, bitters, porters, and stouts.
How it behaves
Flocculation is medium, attenuation is about 67 to 77 percent, and the fermentation range is about 66 to 72 F
Quick tip
If you want the cleanest finish and the best hop definition, keep it in the mid to upper 60s.
OYL 014 British Ale VII
This is the balanced, malty English strain a lot of brewers have been asking for. It makes clean, well balanced ales with real malt presence, stone fruit esters, and a dry, slightly nutty finish. If you brew traditional pub styles or cask style beers, this is a home run.
How it behaves
Flocculation is high, attenuation is about 67 to 71 percent, and the fermentation range is about 64 to 72 F
Quick tip
This one clears fast. If you like bright English ales, a short cold crash can make it look amazing.
OYL 100 Lager I
A crisp, balanced lager strain with a lightly malty profile and a subtle fruity finish. Omega positions it as a backbone for the classic Czech pilsner profile where yeast character supports the balance of soft malt and noble hops without taking over.
How it behaves
Flocculation is listed as medium high, attenuation is about 71 to 75 percent, and the fermentation range is about 48 to 56 F
Quick tip
Give it a little time at the end of fermentation for cleanup, then cold condition if you want that classic lager snap.
OYL 103 American Lager
This one is a little more expressive than many “super neutral” lager strains. Omega notes it as more flocculent and more complex than many comparable lager strains, and it is a great fit for classic American lager and classic American pilsner direction beers. Dry hopping can promote haze, so keep it traditional if you are chasing brilliant clarity.
How it behaves
Flocculation is medium, attenuation is about 73 to 77 percent, and the fermentation range is about 48 to 58 F
Quick tip
If clarity is the goal, skip dry hopping, lager it cold, and let time do the work.
Which one should you choose
Pick OYL 001 if you want crisp German ale direction without a long lager schedule.
Pick OYL 003 if you want a drier English finish and bitterness to pop.
Pick OYL 014 if you want a malt forward English profile that clears quickly.
Pick OYL 100 if you want that classic Czech pils balance.
Pick OYL 103 if you want classic American lager direction with a touch more character.
Questions we get a lot
Do I need a starter
Most of the time, no. One reason we love Omega as our main liquid yeast brand is they pack more cells per pouch than any other liquid yeast brand, so you can usually skip the starter and get great results.
When we do recommend a starter
If the pack is five plus months old, which is rare here.
If your target original gravity is over 1.070 for a five gallon batch.
If you are brewing a lager at traditional lager temps, a starter is the right move for a healthy fermentation and a clean finish.
Do you have these in store and online
Yes. All five of these strains plus the entire Omega yeast Homebrew catalog are available in store and online.
Shipping and freshness
If you are in Wisconsin or the Midwest, we can usually get you some of the freshest liquid yeast quickly. We ship in insulated mailers with a complimentary ice pack. Winter and early spring are ideal for shipping liquid yeast. In hot summer months, we often recommend dry yeast for shipped orders.
How fast does liquid yeast ship in Wisconsin
Most Wisconsin and Midwest orders arrive quickly, and we pack it cold from the start. We try to only ship liquid yeast Monday through Thursday to avoid extra weekend time without refrigeration.
How do you ship liquid yeast
Insulated mailer plus ice pack, and we keep yeast refrigerated until it ships.
